Annemieke Mein's work has apparently not been shown in the Sale gallery until recently because of the claim that "it was craft not art". What a lot of nonsense! Even the current gallery director is dismissive and probably a little irritated that the exhibition attracted a record crowd.
"Look, Annameike is a very, very popular artist and no-one can doubt the amount of effort and skill that goes into creating her works," he said.
"She's obviously quite a well-known Gippsland identity, she was on the front cover of the Gippsland phone book a little while ago and of course she was awarded an Order of Australia some years ago for her contribution to the arts."
You can get an idea of what she does here but, even with high quality prints, nothing can come even close to the experience of seeing it up close. Look out for future exhibitions of her work.
